Chairman Takano’s full statement:

Hi, I’m Chairman Mark Takano. This Memorial Day, join me in honoring the servicemembers who selflessly served, but sadly never returned home.

Throughout our country’s history, members of our armed forces have come from all walks of life bound together by a common sense of patriotic duty to defend the country that they love, even when, at times, it did not love them back.

Despite the personal struggles many Black, Asian, Hispanic, women, Native, and LGBTQ+ servicemembers and their families faced, they believed our country was worth fighting – and even sacrificing their lives – for.

We are, and forever will be, indebted to these individuals. It is our solemn duty to these servicemembers to ensure that ALL veterans—regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, or gender identity—can access the care and benefits they’ve earned.

To the families and loved ones of those we have lost. Our nation can never repay our debt to you, nor can we return the moments you have lost with your loved ones – birthdays, proms, and holidays. We CAN dedicate ourselves to ensuring that you, and those servicemembers who remain with us are treated with dignity and respect, and receive the timely and high quality services they have earned and deserve.

We must always remember those who have given their lives in service to our country, and honor their sacrifice by working to create more perfect America.
